How Tokens Work
Every AI operation in Proseweave — generating scenes, rewriting prose, brainstorming, consistency checks — consumes tokens from your monthly balance. A single novel involves many operations:
- Outline generation — expanding beats into detailed scene plans
- Story Bible context — characters, settings, and style guide are included in every AI call
- Scene generation — turning beats into full prose (often a 2–3 step pipeline)
- Rewrites — most scenes go through ~1.5 rewrites on average
- Brainstorming & consistency checks — optional but valuable passes
A full 90,000-word novel requires roughly 2M tokens with a realistic Haiku/Sonnet blend — that's the Pro tier's full monthly allocation.
Premium Models Cost More
Larger AI models produce richer, more nuanced prose — but they consume tokens faster:
| Model | Relative Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Haiku | 1× | Outlining, beat expansion, brainstorming |
| Sonnet | ~3× | Final prose generation, rewrites |
| Opus | ~5× | Complex scenes, stylistic refinement |
The books-per-month estimates assume a realistic workflow where you use Haiku for structural tasks and Sonnet for prose-heavy work. If you exclusively use Opus, your token budget will go further on quality but produce fewer total words.
Token Top-Ups
Paid plans (Starter, Pro, Max) can purchase additional tokens if you hit your monthly limit. Top-ups are available anytime — no need to upgrade your plan tier.
FAQ
What counts as a "book"?
Estimates are based on a 90,000-word novel — a standard length for most fiction genres. Shorter works (novellas, non-fiction) will use fewer tokens, giving you more room within your allocation.
What happens when I run out of tokens?
You can still access your projects, read and manually edit your work, and export files. AI-powered features (generation, rewriting, consistency checks) will be unavailable until your balance refreshes at the start of your next billing cycle or you purchase a top-up.
Do unused tokens roll over?
Monthly token allocations do not roll over. Each billing cycle starts fresh with your plan's full allocation.
Can I switch plans?
You can upgrade or downgrade at any time. Changes take effect at the start of your next billing cycle.
