Export
When your manuscript is ready, export it from any project view by clicking the Export button in the toolbar. The export dialog lets you choose the format and configure all options before downloading.
Formats
| Format | Availability | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown (.md) | All plans | Version control, importing into other tools, quick review |
| Word (.docx) | Starter and above | Submission to editors, agents, or beta readers |
| EPUB (.epub) | Pro and above | E-readers (Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books) |
DOCX export requires a Starter plan or higher. EPUB export requires Pro or higher. Markdown is available on all plans including Free. See Pricing & Plans for details.
Typical Export Workflow
- Set scenes you're happy with to Final status (in the Outline or Manuscript view).
- Click Export in the toolbar.
- Choose your format.
- Under Scene Status Filter, select Final only to get a clean manuscript.
- Configure format-specific options (font, margins, cover, etc.).
- Click Export to download.
Use the status filter to produce different versions of your manuscript. Export Draft + Revision + Final for a full working draft, or Final only for a polished submission copy.
Common Options
These options apply to all three formats:
| Option | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Title page | On | Includes a title page with book title and author name |
| Table of contents | On | Generates a TOC from act and chapter titles |
| Act headings | On | Includes act titles as major section breaks |
| Scene separator | * * * | Text inserted between scenes within a chapter. Set to empty string to omit |
Scene Status Filter
The status filter controls which scenes are included in the export:
- Select Final only to produce a clean manuscript from completed scenes.
- Select Draft + Revision + Final to include all scenes with prose.
- De-select Outline to exclude scenes without prose (default).
Word (.docx) Options
| Option | Values |
|---|---|
| Font family | Times New Roman, Garamond, Georgia, Courier New, Arial, Calibri |
| Font size | 10pt – 14pt |
| Line spacing | Single, 1.5×, Double |
| Margins | 0.5in – 1.5in (top, bottom, left, right independently) |
For manuscript submission, most agents and publishers expect: Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins. These are common defaults for a reason.
EPUB Options
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| Author name | Embedded in EPUB metadata for e-reader display |
| Language | Language code (e.g., en, fr) for EPUB metadata |
| Cover image | The active cover from the Cover view is automatically embedded |
Cover in EPUB
If you've generated or uploaded a cover in the Cover view and set it as active, it will be automatically embedded in the EPUB — no extra steps needed. To include a cover:
- Go to the Cover view (
⌘7). - Generate or upload a cover image.
- Click the checkmark to set it as the active cover.
- Export to EPUB — the cover is included.
Blog Projects
Blog projects export the same way but skip act-level headings. Post titles serve as the top-level headings in exported documents.
